Water Based Coatings with Covalently Linked Novel Flame Retardant

The paper is focused on water based coatings with improved flame stability. Self-crosslinking latexes were prepared using the technique of semi-continuous emulsion polymerization and they contained microgel particles of the core-shell structure. The flame retardant based on a phosphazene derivate was copolymerized in the microgel structure with acrylic comonomers (methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and diacetone acrylamide). Diacetone acrylamide was copolymerized in the shell structure of microgel particles because of interparticle crosslinking of latex particles to provide the reaction of adipic acid dihydrazide. It was found that the presence of hexaallylamino-cyclo-triphosphazene affects neither optical nor mechanical properties of latex coatings but it can function as a crosslinking agent in microgel particles and has a positive effect on flame retardation.
