Abstract

The key importance of oxonium salts is stressed, the explaining of which is mostly omitted in textbooks. The obvious reason consists in the instability of these substances under standard conditions in the solid state in comparison with the analogous ammonium salts. As it is shown in several examples, these salts, and especially their cations, play an important role in many reaction mechanisms.
