Synthesis of Fragrant Lactones Using Catalysts of Hydrotalcite Types

Abstract

Lactones are utilized in the production of fragrant compositions and flavor complexes for the cosmetic and food industry. This work reports on a three-step lactone synthesis: 1. Aldol condensation of an aldehyde and cyclic ketone catalysed by hydrotalcite. 2. Hydrogenation of the C=C bond in 2-alkylidenecycloalkan-1-one catalyzed by a metal on hydrotalcite support. 3. Oxidation of 2-alkyl¬cycloalkan-1-one catalysed by modified hydrotalcite. All the steps gave high yields.
